This great trumpet player made his mark on the history of jazz greats with his incredible chops and fiery trumpet solos. I have tried to showcase his playing and compositional skills on this show. It was all captured for future viewing as seen below. OK, so maybe it is not all that interesting as TV, but it was a cool experiment, that I will try again in another upcoming show. As far as the music, we will end 2008 with mostly party music. The show starts off in a Latin groove with Tito Puente. I took several requests through Facebook, so if there is something you'd like to hear, post it on my Wall and I will do my best to accommodate it.

You can also view with the full player at:
http://www.mogulus.com/jazzandbeyond

Playlist
Track * Artist * Album
Oye Como Va * Tito Puente * Party with Tito
Take Five * Tito Puente * Party with Tito
Boy What a Night * Ed Fast and Conga Bop * Straight Shot
Outline * Lauren Sevian * Blueprint
New Year's Dream * Mike DiRubbo * New York Accent-Live at Kitanos
Pop Tune #1 * Chris Potter * Follow the Red Line
I Wonder * Yellow Jackets Featuring Mike Stern * Who Let the Cats Out
Lil Tipsy * Robert Glasper * Mood
Scrapple from the Apple * Dexter Gordon * Our Man In Amsterdam
Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most * Joel Frahm * We Used to Dance
** End of Podcast **
Carrot Cake * Eric Alexander * Alexander the Great
Swing Out * Bob Mintzer Big Band * Swing Out
Round Midnight * Miles Davis * Cool & Collected
Milestones * Miles Davis * Cool & Collected
Four * Miles Davis Quintet * The Legendary Prestige Quintet

Play Podcast
Last 2008
To download file, ctrl-click (Mac); right click (Win)- (approx. 58 megs).

Winter Solstice 2008

Our Winter Solstice special with some great holiday classics in tonights mix. It begins with one of the finest versions I have heard of After the Rain as arranged and performed by Anat Cohen on her recent CD. Another track I am particularly fond of is Dave Holland's Equality and the beautiful soulful alto solo by Antonio Hart. The Miles from India track should please a lot of listeners that write to me digging the Indian fusion sets that I do, but contrasted with Milestones from Mile's sextet from 1958 really shows how he could swing.

Playlist
Track * Artist * Album
After the Rain * Anat Cohen * Notes from the Village
Typhoon 11 * Eric Alexander * It's all In The Game
Deluge * Wayne Shorter * JuJu
Not So Softly * Lauren Sevian * Blueprint
Tolerance * Greg Osby * Nine Levels
Equality * Dave Holland * Pass it on
All Blues * Various * Miles From India
Milestones * Miles Davis * Cool and Collected
Season of Change * Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band * Season of Change
** End of Podcast **
Central Park West * Odean Pope * Locked and Loaded
Blue Domain * Ed Fast and Conga Bob * Straight Shot
South Bixel * Eldar * re-imagination
The Toys of Men * Stanley Clark * Toys of Men
Karma * Aaron Parks * Invisible Cinema

Play Podcast
Rain
To download file, ctrl-click (Mac); right click (Win)- (approx. 54 megs).

Lauren Sevian - LSQ on ITG

This show features an interview with Baritone Saxophonist Lauren Sevian. This and several other tracks I have played on recent shows were brought to my attention from Ken Blanchard's excellent blog Jazz Note SDP. Check out his blog for some very valuable recommendations to build your jazz music library.

Playlist
Track * Artist * Album
Steppin' with the Lord * Harry Whitaker * Thoughts(Past and Present)
Song for my Father * Horace Silver * Song For My Father
The NY Hartford Connection * Albert Rivera * Re-Introduction
Hilton's Rumba * Insight * A Genesis
Pride and Joy * Cassandra McKinley * Till Tomorrow
Footprints * Chico Freeman and Arthur Blythe * Luminous
Bragadocio * Evidence * The Message

Play Podcast
Fill-in
To download file, ctrl-click (Mac); right click (Win)- (approx. 42 megs).

Appearing nearby

We are fortunate to live in the Hartford area, half way between New York and Boston, to be able to catch some great acts live. This show is the remaining tracks of a broadcast from October 4 of this year. Since I only had 4 tracks, I added a bonus recording of the great Charles McPherson whom we saw this weekend performing at the Jazz Standard with Tom Harrell. I just tacked it on to the end of the radio broadcast so it is not announced, but this track shows McPherson's strong bebop style in the tradition of Charlie Parker.

Playlist
Track * Artist * Album
Hotel * Garaj Mahal * W00t
Nia * Wallace Roney * Jazz
Who Let the Cats Out * Mike Stern * Who Let the Cats Out
Michael * Ernie Watts * Turning Point
bonus track not in original broadcast
Blue 'N Boogie * Charles McPherson * Manhattan Nocturne

October 18 Show

This week my show was supposed to be preempted by a sports broadcast, but due to a change in schedule, I was able to regain one hour of my program. We caught Mike Stern at one of our favorite NYC venues, 55 Bar. This is a tiny, intimate venue, and we were seated at the bar, literally two feet from this great guitarist, as you can see from the video I captured that evening.

Badal Roy came to Hartford as part of the International Jazz Festival. In addition to his regular quartet, he brought his fellow bandmates from Miles Davis's band Dave Liebman (sax), and Michael Henderson (bass). I shot this video of the ensemble playing from Miles's In A Silent Way. Take note of the gorgeous Bamboo Flute playing by Steve Gorn.

Playlist
Track * Artist * Album
Expansions * Lonnie Liston Smith * Expansions
Farah * Pharoah Sanders * Rejoice
Equinox * Kenny Garrett * Pursuance: The Music of John Coltrane
Ganja Groove * Mystery Feet * Upstream
3 Circles * Yellowjackets * Lifecycles feat. This series of five jazz shows is sponsored by the Hartford Office of Cultural Affairs, and produced by friend of this show, Andres Chaparro. Insight performed last week, and it was a great scene to see the community turn out to support live jazz in downtown Hartford. We finish the show with a birthday tribute to John Coltrane, who would have been 82 last week.

Playlist
Track * Artist * Album
Hilton's Rumba * Insight * A Genesis
On the Road * Esteban Arrufatt * Time to Share!
Birthright * Lummie Spann * Live and Direct
Dindi * Taeko Fukao * One Love
Harry Whitiker Trio * The Children and the Warlock * Thoughts (past and present)
You, the Night and the Music * Greg Abate * Monterey Live (unreleased)
Moments Notice * John Coltrane * Blue Trane
Cousin Mary * John Coltrane * Giant Steps
Acknowledgment * John Coltrane * A Love Supreme
Lonnie's Lament * Pharoah Sanders * Crescent With Love
** End of Podcast **
Equinox * Dwight West * Tribute to the Masters
Like Sonny * Kenny Garrett * Pursuance: the Music of JC
Cariba * Rich Goldstein Quartet * Comin' from Montgomery
Winter in America * Gill Scott-Heron * The First Minute of a New Date
Flute Thing * Al Kooper, Blues Project * Soul of a Man: Al Kooper Live
Afro Blue * Ashley S. Starting with harmonica master Toots Thielmans. Thanks to Ken Blanchard of Jazz Note SDP for turning me on to that one. Next, dig this sixteen minute track from newcomer Empirical. I am introduced to a brand new CD from Kenny Garrett. It is quite a different sound from one of my favorite alto players. We end the show with some great grooves from a new CD by Philly's Organissimo and multi-reed player James Carter.

Playlist
Track * Artist * Album
Speak No Evil * Toots Thielmans * Only Trust Your Heart
Three and One * Toots Thielmans * Only Trust Your Heart
Palantir * Empirical * Empirical
Sktetches of MD * Kenny Garret * Sketches of MD
Groovadelphia * Organissimo * Groovidelphia
Rapid Shave * James Carter * Presenttense

Eclectic mix

All I can say about tonight's show is that it is thematically all over the place. This great alto player is often considered the founder of Be-Bop music. Before Bird in the 1940's, Jazz was primarily big-band music, dance music that was perhaps the most popular genre of it's time. Bird featured a hard driving quartet and quintet format with an emphasis on improvisation, freeing the soloist to stretch out. As I listen to the 2 Bird originals on this set, each under 3 minutes, it amazes me how much music is packed into these tracks. The rest of the set features modern day jazz artists that have covered Bird's compositions as well as artists that have been influenced by his music. Actually, every great jazz artist that has played this idium since Bird, has taken some of his chops from Charlie Parker.

Playlist
Track * Artist * Album
Now's the Time * Charlie Parker * Original Recordings of CP
Donna Lee * Charlie Parker * Bird/The Savoy Recording
Yardbird Suite * Dwight West * Tribute to the Masters
Dewey Square * Barbara Dennerlein * Tribute to Charlie
Ornithology * Barbara Dennerlein * Tribute to Charlie
This I Dig Of You * Greg Abate Quintet * Bop Lives
Bop Lives * Greg Abate Quintet * Bop Lives
Arriving Soon * Cannonball Adderley * Plus
Confirmation * Jackie McLean * 4, 5, And 6
Scrapple From The Apple * Keith Jarrett * Up For It
Time's Lie * Joe Farrell * Moon Germs

Heard Only Here

This show will start out with a set of tracks that can only be heard on In The Groove. It was an incredible experience. Three stages, with jazz artists performing simultaneously throughout the day. This show features those artists that we got the chance to see at the Festival. They run the gamut from jazz legends, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins to newcomers Esperanza Spaulding and Lionel Loueke. Perhaps that best performance for me was the Chris Potter Underground. The amazing tenor sax player was seen all day playing with nearly every act, running from one stage to the next. (due to technical problems in the studio, the Newport feature starts halfway into the show).

Check out these links to read my blog entry about the Newport Jazz Fest, and to see my photo gallery. I may post the second hour of the show in the near future.

Another eclectic mix of old and new.
