The Hartford-NYC Connection

Many of our local Jazz artists have made the leap to playing in prestigious New York City venues. Some have moved there in hopes of pursuing the dream of making a steady living, and playing jazz with the greats. This show is all about that Hartford area connection to the City. We are indeed lucky to be only a couple hours train ride and cab fare to places like the Village Vanguard, Jazz Standard, Blue Note Cafe and more. There are also many jazz mentors to give these kids their big break in the jazz scene. Most importantly, we have the cats with the chops that can play and know how to swing with the best of them.

What I've been listening to

Just some music I've been listening to. Another couple of days hitting the jazz clubs in NYC this week. Got to see some great acts such as Steve Turre, EJ Strickland and others. Locally caught a great jazz jam led by Steve Davis. The music just keeps coming. If you are in the area, don't forget Dave Holland's band coming to UCONN's Jorgensen Auditorium this Thursday. We've got them all represented here.

Just play some jazz

Radiothon has ended, so we'll go back to just playing jazz. This week was the final push for donations to WHUS, and with the support of our podcast listeners, this show met its fundraising goals. I've edited out most of the pleas for donations, so there are some abrupt edits in my mic breaks. As for the music, there is a wide variety of jazz styles represented here. A couple of albums of note are Frain/Dunlop and a new release from Bobby Watson. I really dig both of these CD's and you will be hearing more from them in the coming weeks.

DJQ Live from Studio A

The Rob DeSesa Quintet performed live at WHUS Studio A this Saturday morning, and we recorded it live for this podcast. These wonderful dedicated musicians played great compositions by the likes of Coltrane, Rollins, Shorter and more. We were fortunate to have the WHUS engineer on-hand, so the audio quality is fantastic, and I ripped it at a much higher bit-rate than usual. I hope you enjoy this special live performance by these talented artists. More info about these artists at Simmer Music.

DeSesa Jazz Quintet is:

Mike Caruk - Trumpet, Rob DeSesa - Drums, Mark Dunlap - Bass, Brad Rickert - Piano, Dia Silverstien - Sax, Flute
