Jazz Lives!

This show just makes me feel that Jazz Lives! We've got new artists, local hartford jazz musicians, and a special guest. Greg Abate joins us in an interview after just returning from a european tour, and with an upcoming performance at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston. The show is Thursday Aug 2. If you go, look for the guy in the WHUS tee shirt (me) and say hello! In the interview, Greg talks to us about traveling, the state of Jazz and composing music. I've split the interview into two parts. I'll air one part in each of the two podcast segments.

Post-Modern Bop

A sub-genre of jazz as practiced by modern era jazz musicians rooted in the bebop tradition. It draws on many different influences (e.g. latin, classical, soul) that expands the music beyond the traditional be-bop form. This show features some great modern jazz artists. The show is partly inspired by Hartford area musicians, Steve Davis and Jimmy Greene who performed friday evening at the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz. As usual, you will hear many great modern jazz artitsts both well known and young newcomers on the scene.

Kind of Blue

Tonights broadcast is based on the Miles Davis landmark LP, Kind of Blue. Many consider this as perhaps the greatest Jazz album ever, and I certainly would rank it at least in the top five. I was inspired to do this feature after listening to this wonderful NPR Podcast on the making of Kind of Blue. I was tempted to play the podcast on air, but I am not sure of the legality of doing so. I would highly recommend clicking the link to get some incitleful background on this recording session. You will hear some choice cuts from Kind of Blue, along with some other tracks from this era featuring session men from KOB, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, John Coltrane and others.

Old, New and Indie

I received a bunch of interesting CD's from Independent jazz artists that I want to feature. We love to promote these great artists that never seem to get the recognition they deserve. Giving these folks airplay is what community and college radio, like WHUS, is all about. In addition, a couple of new releases from artists you know (Chick, Bela, Ponty, Zawinul). In Part 2, I play some great old bebop albums from the 60's from the likes of Hank Mobley, Red Garland and others. New, Old and Indie, that about covers it all.
