Live In NYC

Another cool night in NYC. Here are some of the acts we caught at the Jazz Standard and the Village Vanguard a couple of nights ago. It is wonderful and inspiring to see such a great number of fresh new jazz artists on the scene. These aren't just great musicians showing off their chops, but artist with their own voices, taking the music in new directions. Very hip. The first half of this show features some of these artists, and part two highlights some of the grand masters that have played and recorded at the legendary Village Vanguard in the past.

Psychedelic 70's

This show celebrates those psychedelic 70's; the years of experimentation. The jazz scene was no exception. This was the birth of fusion, the influence of Indian musical forms, synthisizers and electronics, post production mixing and editing of strange mystical sounds. This music stretched the boundrys of what was considered jazz. The musicians you hear in tonights shows were surely pioneers and their music had a profound effect on the music from that point forward.

We've been playing a lot of different theme shows lately. Lots of fusion, R&B, crossover stuff. Tonight lets get back to some straight-ahead hard bop jazz. Nothing in jazz beats that standard quintet of Sax, Trumpet, Piano, Bass and Drums. No rock, fusion or electronics tonight.

Gary and Chick

I had the pleasure of attending a performance by Gary Burton and Chick Corea recently at University of Connecticut Jorgenson Auditorium. Together they created a hauntingly beautiful tone, and an incredible empathy with each others playing. At times it seemed as if they were as one artist with four arms playing two instruments. Burton and Corea have been playing together for over 30 years. This show highlights them as a duet, and as leaders of their own bands over a span of many years. Enjoy the many facets of their musical careers.
