The Lost Session

No, not really some long lost jazz tapes... just part of my show from a couple of weeks ago that was never published. By request, and because my regular broadcast show was preempted this week, here it is. Starts out with a couple of interesting arrangements from Skerik and his Syncopated Taint Septet (dig the title of the first cut), and ends with a kickin' organ set from the masters of the B3, Jimmy McGriff, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and the immortal Jimmy Smith.

Goodbye to Michael Brecker

A sad day, last Saturday, with the passing of Tenor great Michael Brecker, and also Alice Coltrane on the same day. Michael Brecker was perhaps the greatest tenor sax player in the post-Coltrane era. His forceful tenor sound is heard on his own CD's and contributed to albums from many pop and jazz artists. Alice Coltrane brought an eastern spiritual element to works of her husband John's music, as well as her own fine recordings. We honor both with this radio broadcast and podcast.

Friday Night at the Blue Note Cafe

What is better than going to NYC and hitting the jazz clubs. That is exactly what I did at the Blue Note Cafe in Greenwich Village last night. What a great evening. We saw great jazz music from some of the old-timers as well as up and coming young jazz artists. Headlining was the Jazz Crusaders with Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, and Steve Gadd. Following that show was young Tenor titan Bob Reynolds with great new pianist Aaron Goldberg, guest Taylor Eghisti, bassist Janek Gwizdala and others. It was a night to remember and I would like to share some of their music with you on In The Groove.

Great 2006 releases

For the first show of the New Year, we'll reflect on some of the best releases from 2006. As I reviewed these albums, I was struck by how much great new jazz is being released. Unfortunatley, most of this music never gets airplay other than on small community radio stations such as this. Many thanks to WHUS for the opportunity to play this music and spread the joy of jazz to our audience of this great radio station, and the worldwide audience of our podcast.
