James Brown Tribute

The Hardest Working Man in Show Buisness, James Brown, sadly passed away this week on Christmas day. His influence and innovation touched many artists, including those playing Jazz. Greats like Herbie Hancock and Joshua Redman and others fused JB's funky musical style into the jazz genre. We'll here from some of those musicians as well as the Godfather of Soul himself. So get ready for a Funky Good Time on In The Groove, as we pay homage to James Brown.

'Tis the season to reflect on the Spiritual. This show is comprised of music that evokes a sense of searching for that spirit among us which will guide us toward attaining a higher consciousness and peace in the world. God knows we are a long way from achieving that.

Global Warming Jazz

Mid December and the temp is still about 60 degrees. Whats up with that? We'll just have to play some cool jazz to bring things down to seasonable temperatures. This show is a great mix of some jazz bebop masters, and some great independent artists who have kindly contributed their tracks to this program. Dig these grooves.

2006 Jazz Grammy Nominees

This show features albums that have been nominated to the, mostly ignored, Jazz Categories. An interesting selection from the Academy. When these grammy winners are announced on the glitzy Hollywood show in a couple of months, you can be sure that, shamefully, America's true artistic music, Jazz, will not be represented. However, you can depend on In the Groove to bring you the nominees and winners right here on WHUS FM and our podccast. For the complete list of the Jazz Nominees, go to the Grammy Awards website.

HH and the 88's

Tonights show features the artistry of Herbie Hancock as well as other tracks hilighting some great piano performances or solo's. Honestly, there are so many great pianists in Jazz music that it would be impossible to cover all the ones I wish to. It would literally take a year of shows to do so. I have always admired Herbie's contribution to the jazz idiom. He has always sought to find new ways to express himself on his instrument, and I hope these selections illustrate that. Other pianists presented here have been influenced by Hancock (Barron, Eldar), or perhaps had an influence over him (Evans, Tyner, Jamal).
