Nu-jazz, nujazz and New Jazz

From wikipedia - Nu-jazz was coined in the late 1990s to refer to styles which combine jazz textures and sometimes jazz instrumentation with electronic music. Like the term electronica, nu jazz is a loosely defined umbrella musical style. Tonights show features both new artists that have forged this new genre as well as traditional jazz artists that have adopted electronica into their music.

Those great progressive bands out of the 70's; Yes, EL&P, Hendrix, Zappa, sparked my interest in listening to real musicianship and hieghtened my appreciation of complex compositions and musical forms. At the same time, jazz musicians like Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, John McLaughlin were experimenting with rock rhythms and instrumentation, resulting in Jazz Fusion. This mix represents the best of these genres, plus new musicians that keep Jazz-Rock Fusion alive and well.

Jackie McLean Tribute... and beyond

Tonights broadcast begins with a tribute to the great Jackie McLean, who passed away one week ago. Jackie was a jazz legend, particuarly here in the Hartford Connecticut area where he headed the Institute for Jazz at University of Hartford and was the founder of the Artists Collective. Featured here are some of Jackie's early recordings as a leader, and his work with Charles Mingus. As the show progresses, we will transition to new music by Chick Corea, Tone Center Fusion guitar series and more.
