Trios
This show features jazz trios in many different combinations. One usually thinks of piano, bass and drums as your traditional jazz trio, and indeed much of this show is with that format. Beyond that are piano-less trios led by sax, guitar, organ-guitar-drum trios, and other formats represented here. Of particular interest is the unique sound of Rudresh Mahanthappa's new trio Indo-Pak coalition with alto sax, guitar and tabla. It is a very interesting fusion of jazz and mid-eastern sounds that works very well. I also want to draw attention to the George Colligan trio that performed last Friday at Firehouse12 in New Haven. George is an amazing talented composer and piano player as heard on two tracks in this podcast. Thanks George for the fine performance and CD.

Please correct the impression that you gave your listeners on April 12, 2009. While certain political and religious leaders and their followers in India and Pakistan may consider the other side to be enemies to make a general statement about all Indians and Pakistanis is misleading.
Moreover, regardless of the state of affairs between the two countries, artists (not just musicians) from each country have exhibited or performed in the other country for decades, often sharing the same stage or setting. Hence, a collaboration such as Rudresh's rather than being unusual is common.

I think you are being a little harsh, Leon. I certainly did not intend to leave any such impression. After re-listening to my comments, I don't see anything that is offensive. "Usually" (not always) they have been considered enemies, and it IS nice to see them "come together" for this record. I am certainly glad to hear that in the Arts, this is a common occurrence. Thanks for pointing that out.
Nice job, Ken.
Nothing offensive, just an innocent, off-the-cuff statement reflecting the general state of the world as seen on CNN...
Thanks for the great show!
