Funkified Jazz

Funk and fusion is the theme for tonight's show. Can you call this jazz? I certainly do. I hope I am not offending the purists that are steady listeners to my show and podcast. Last week was pure be-bop. This week we go electric. What's your pleasure; Fusion or Bop? I'd like to know. Please leave your comments below. Help me to shape the direction of future In The Groove, Jazz and Beyond.

Hi Ken,
Of course this is also Jazz!
This 100-yr old tag, applies for a lot of sub-genres, and moods.
If someone doesn't like some of their waves (fusion, hard-bop or dixieland - e.g.: I don't like dixieland), simply don't hear it, but leave the doors opened for the masses.
Congrats and regards from Brazil.

As long as there is improvisation in it, it's Jazz. Isn't it?

This podcast is full of energy. I like it a lot.

It's shows like this that keep me firing up my mp3 player in your direction. I'm not as much a fan of bebop, but when you throw in funk and electric fusion, I can always count on getting turned on to some new artists. Thanks for getting funky!

Hi Ken, I totally agree with Tom. I like funk and fusion a lot more than bebop and "old fashioned jazz", although I have to admit that I also don't dislike this genre completely. Anyway, I would appreciate a little more funk and fusion than you usually put in your shows. Thanks for the great show and keep on going!

Great show! I'm also a big fusion fan. But I enjoy all your shows. You have a knack for stretching the bounds of what I think I like. I.e., you play stuff from sub-genres that I don't think I like, and I end up liking it after all. You have the best jazz show on (or off) the internet!

Nice set! I'm a new listener to this podcast.

Maybe some Miles Davis fusion era stuff next time (If it isn't too long for the podcast ;p)? :D

Here another big fan of funky jazz. Nice to here you give Live At Tonic attention it deserves. A highly underrated album.

Hi Ken,
again a very nice one. I guess we share our musical taste. I like almost all kinds of gooving jazz related music (except Dixie, Free and Smooth). Keep playing the funkified stuff. But I would also be very pleased to hear more modern Big Band music like the Gerald Wilson Orchestra you played in your recent show or the WDR Big Band. Or what about african jazz (check out the latest release of Dee Dee Bridgewater), or Latin Funk, or, or... (BG)? BTW: I agree with you entirely that Chris Potter`s Follow The Red Line is one of the best albums this year - a record I hearded for the first time at your podcast. Your show is a MUST for every jazz enthusiast!
Season´s greeting and all the best for the New Year.

Hi Ken,

absolutely, this is Jazz. That's because I'm a big fan of fusion of course. I also like bebop and other genres (and yes, please do keep on playing them) but please do not cut back on regular playing of fusion related material.

I agree on the "Follow the Red Line" disc. I will probably order it (as I have for multiple other artists heard first on your prodcast).

greetings,
Bruno from Belgium
