Josef and Max

A tribute to a couple of my Jazz heroes who sadly passed away recently. Joe Zawinul and Max Roach were both innovators and artists as well as giants to the jazz community. Max Roach set the standard for be-bop drumming as he forged new territory in jazz with Charlie Parker. His collaborations with greats like Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus pushed jazz music to new creative musical forms. This NPR Podcast chronicles the art of Max Roach. Joe Zawinul was one of the driving forces in fusing electronic and world music with jazz. His groundbreaking work with Miles Davis and Weather Report made Zawinul one of the founding fathers of Jazz/Fusion. We will miss them both. (Correction - During my first mic break I mistakenly credited Richie Powell as the drummer in Daahoud. Of course, Max is on drums, and Powell is on piano)

What a great loss indeed. Thanks for selecting some of the finest tracks from these gentlemen.

I have two requests, if I may. First, can you play some more from "Weather Report"? Had already heard from them, but would like to hear more.
Secondly, more generally, I notice that a lot of media do a "tribute" when fine artists die. That is of course really necessary, but what about the living artists? Who would you consider, already living, to be such a good artist that he deserves a "tribute" (or "roundup") episode? [not that you need to do an entire episode, just a couple of songs from a great artist, still living]

thanks again,

Bruno from Belgium
